Densified & Polished Concrete Floors

THE ENVIRONMENTALLY FRIENDLY FLOORING ALTERNATIVE

What is Densified & Polished Concrete?

Densified concrete is simply basic concrete that has been treated with a chemical to make it harder, more abrasion resistant, and dust free. The chemicals applied vary greatly but the purpose of adding these chemicals, collectively known as densifiers, to the concrete is to put solid material into the pores and the voids (open spaces) in the concrete; the fewer the number of voids the stronger the surface becomes. Once the concrete has been densified a second step in the process may occur: polishing. By polishing the floor with progressively finer diamond pads it is possible to increase the level of shine on the floor until the concrete floor looks like the finest terrazzo.
Where is Densified or Polished Concrete Used?
Densified and polished concrete is quickly becoming the flooring surface of choice for big box retail stores, warehouses, supermarkets and other facilities that want a superior, low-care, economical floor surface while protecting the environment. It is the ultimate no-wax flooring material, which will not flake or dust and will not wear out. Thanks to recent advances in polishing equipment and techniques, contractors are now grinding concrete floor surfaces, whether new or old, to a high-gloss finish that never needs waxes or coatings.
Densified Concrete is the fastest growing floor market in North America. The reasons for this phenomenon are varied but any examination will point out the facts that densified concrete has lower cost, longer life, greater performance characteristics, is total green technology and, in most circumstances, is the base floor for all other floorings so it already is in place. Factor in the superior durability and performance of concrete, and it's no wonder why more retail, warehouse, and office facilities are opting for polished concrete flooring as an alternative to marble, granite, tile, linoleum, or epoxy-coated concrete.

How Should Densified or Polished Concrete Floors Be Maintained?

Low maintenance is not the same as no maintenance. It is vital to use the proper cleaners as well as the proper cleaning procedure on densified and polished concrete floors. As densified concrete has begun to take a significant place in the flooring market, most companies have tried to clean it with off-the-shelf cleaners which they were selling to clean all other floors.

Experience shows that standard cleaners are detrimental to the densified concrete surface, reducing the gloss and allowing soil to impinge the surface. Standard cleaners also leave behind detergent residues which ultimately begin to break down the concrete surface causing pitting, spalling and crazing of the floor. Concrete has a different pH structure than floor finish and needs to be cleaned in a different manner if the look of the original surface is to be maintained. Canadian Mill Supply is an industry recognized leader in the field of cleaning and enhancing densified and polished concrete floors.

DIAMOND FLOOR PADS

A radically new system for cleaning densified or polished concrete, Canadian Mill Supply Diamond Floor Pads are manufactured with thousands of tiny industrial-grade diamonds embedded throughout the floor pad. As the floor is scrubbed the floor pads work with DC 303 or Degreaser Plus to remove impinged dirt from the floor while, at the same time, working to improve the shine of the floor over time. The pads are available in sizes ranging from 17” to 27” and in 400, 800, 1500 and 3000 grit. The higher the number of the grit of the pad the finer the diamonds that are used, resulting in a greater the shine on the floor. Packaged five pads per case, the pads can be used with any swing machine, high speed burnisher or autoscrubber.
